NEW YORK — Another American Idol contestant is heading for Broadway.

Following in the footsteps of Frenchie Davis, who appears in the rock musical Rent, Diana DeGarmo will join the cast of Hairspray on Feb. 7.

The 18-year-old DeGarmo, one of the Fox television series' most popular runners-up, will portray the heroine's best friend, Penny Pingleton, in the musical, which opened on Broadway in August 2002.

Hairspray, based on the cult John Waters' film, concerns a chubby Baltimore teen who wants to appear on a TV dance show. The show now stars Shannon Durig as the eager young woman and John Pinette as her full-figured mother.

  1. I saw WSS and was so impressed with Diana. Was that really her first musical?! Glad to see she's continuing to pursue theatre.
West Side Story was a great production. Congrats on a job well done.

  2. I am so excited to see that Diana will be appearing in Hairspray. She is an amazing talent with a magnificent voice. I have watched her progress with interest and bought everything she recorded and will continue to do so. I know she will have a very successful career.

  3. I never actually asked Diana about her musical theatre experience, but I think that she had done a couple of shows in high school. I am not sure about that though.
